Marriage with Robots by 2050?

October 14, 2007 / by theworldaroundus

Weird, isn't it? Humans could marry robots within the century.

The University of Maastricht in the Netherlands is awarding a doctorate to a researcher who wrote a paper on marriages between humans and robots.

David Levy, a British artificial intelligence researcher at the college, wrote in his thesis, "Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners," that trends in robotics and shifting attitudes on marriage are likely to result in sophisticated robots that will eventually be seen as suitable marriage partners.

Levy's conclusion was based on about 450 publications in the fields of psychology, sexology, sociology, robotics, materials science, artificial intelligence, gender studies and computer-human interaction.

The thesis examines human attitudes toward affection, love and sexuality and concluded that the findings are just as applicable to human interaction with robots of the future as they are to the relationships between humans of today.

What do you think?

    [OHMY]Steppford wives or husbands..[HUH],

I wonder what that catalog of features would look like[LOL][OHMY][BLUSH][OHMY][LOL]
Seriously though, people seem detached enough from others in this modernized world, that would just be going too far.

That kinda throws a monkey wrench in the "sanctity of Marriage" debate too.[ROLLEYES]

It is just mind-boggling. One does not know how to respond/react to such news: At the first glance it looks something totally ficticious, someting in the mind of science fiction writers, but on the other side, at the current pace science is moving, who knows???

Hope you are fine up there, take care.

    Of course, it does.

In many Muslim societies, a wealthy man can have up to four wives plus concubines etc.
This practice leaves three or more men unmarried in the lurch.

    Hello theworldaroundus,

Marriage to artificial partners? Unbelievable although imaginable for the future. I do not understand the concept as to why such grand and smart professors, scientists and researchers would contemplate such insanity? Our relationship to a robot or machinery is only extended to the assistance it can provide us, not more than that!

Insane, though interesting! Thank you for the post.

My take on the robot thing is what happens happens...

I could see the advantage if my sweetie has a headache, for example. I could just sachay over to the spare boudoir and work out my amorous affections on the perfect lover while my wife made herself comfortable. After I'd shot my wad...I could snuggle up with my real live human gal...and in the morning she could make ALL my dreams cum true... [ROLLEYES][KISS][HEART]

I guess I'll have to find myself a wife first, but dating can be fun too!!!

I think the robot marriage thing brings up the whole issue of what constitutes a human being. What is emotion? What is passion?

Science Fiction has dealt with this for decades--remember "Helen O'Loy"? Star Trek the next generation episode about Data being human. Most recently I read Ian M. Banks' "The Culture" series of novels where the machines were much more "human" than the humans. There's also Philip K. Dick's amazing "Do Androids dream of electronic Sheep"--the basis for the movie "Bladerunner".

Did any of this fiction come up with a definate "answer". I don't think so, but it certainly gives us food for thought.

Perhaps the real question is how human are we in our intimate relations? In everyday life do we treat our partner as a full human being or do we treat them as merely our appendages--hewers of wood and relievers of sexual tension?

The whole thing could definitely give the gay and lesbian community a much-deserved respite from all the negative fundamentally nutty fundamentalist "christian" folks who spend SO much time villifying those they perceive as different and therefore evil...

So, let's bring on the robots...maybe JoeRepgnantCon would buy one for his boudoir.... [WINK]

SciFi.com reports that the appropriately named "Robot Land" will "have all sorts of facilities for the research, development, and production of robots, as well as things like exhibition halls and even a stadium for robot-on-robot competitions. The $530 million project should get underway sometime in 2009."
Korea.net adds that the city's industrial output will have an "emphasis on so-called service robots that can clean homes and provide entertainment."
Now we just have to wait till the city secedes from South Korea; it then achieves a kind of limited national sovereignty; it seats a robot-ambassador at the UN; its Artificially Intelligent offspring form a Parliament, or a Ministry of War; they manufacture cannons and other violent forms of propulsive enginery, filling the sky with drones; and then human history becomes interesting again.
We'll read future Machine-Iliads, magnetically engraved on self-aware harddrives as the robots roll toward war with Beijing...

What do I think? Well in 47 years I hope I’m not looking for a mate lol… DATA? Gosh this could send some people reeling lol. I can’t fathom such a unity. What would I say to her when her shine begins to fade? What if I couldn’t keep up with her lol? What if her expectations were not of this world? What if her personality was altered by some random segments of code lol? Let’s see binary output coupled sexual input would yield what lol? What if she decided to have some upgrades and our “data link” was compromised lol?

This could really change things lol…

My question to you would be why do you have to bang our brains with this stuff lol?

Best wishes from the Palace my friend..
